A catastrophic chain of mountain hazards struck the Nepal–China border on August 26, 2026, sending a fast-moving flood and debris flow through the Rasuwa and Nuwakot districts.
What happened
A cascading disaster
According to the Stimson Center, a massive collapse of rock and glacial ice near the Langtang range triggered an avalanche into the Lhende River. The resulting flood wave gathered water, rock, and sediment as it moved downstream, devastating border facilities, homes, businesses, roads, bridges, and hydropower infrastructure.
Communities were hit with extraordinary speed. Entire settlements along the river corridor suffered severe damage, disrupting families, schools, transportation, electricity, and access to everyday necessities.
